  1. A type of asexual reproduction in which an
  2. outgrowth develops from a cell to form a new
  3. individual. Most yeasts reproduce in this
  4. way. In a suitable environment yeasts grow
  5. rapidly, forming long chains of cells as the
  6. buds themselves produce further buds before
  7. being separated from the parent. Simple
  8. invertebrates, such as hydra, can also
  9. reproduce by budding. In horticulture, the
  10. term is used for a technique of plant
  11. propagation whereby a bud (or scion) and a
  12. sliver of bark from one plant are transferred
  13. to an incision made in the bark of another
  14. plant (the stock). This method of grafting is
  15. often used for roses.
